Talking about masks with kids

parent's guide

School is right around the corner and sending kids into the physical classroom will become a reality. You or someone you know might be worried, confused or skeptical of sending your kid off to school without knowing how they will react to wearing a mask for a full school day. As a parent or someone who helps with kids, you want to best prepare them to feel comfortable with their every day new “normal”.

How to talk about it:

  • Stay calm

  • Explain in detail (kids understand more than you think!)

  • Allow for any/all questions

  • Let your kid(s) feel emotions

  • Use simple words that they will understand

  • Give it time, it won’t be a one and done, but make the conversation a normality in your household

  • BE SUPPORTIVE!

helpful tips

Preparing for school

Teach your kids the proper way to wear a mask:

check out our video and watch it with your kids!

  • Wash hands for 20 seconds

  • Pick up clean mask by the ear loop and put on ear

  • Repeat on the other side

  • Secure the nose piece is formed to the nose and/or covering the nose

  • Secure the bottom part of mask is covering the chin

Practice at home:

  • Make a fun game to see how long you can go without touching your mask!

  • If your kid touches their mask, make it a habit that they should wash their hands or use hand sanitizer

  • Practice wearing the mask around the house or even to play outside

Set an example:

  • As a parent or someone who helps with kids, you should wear your mask around and often. Visuals help kids understand better.

  • Practice what you preach, if you touch your mask, wash your hands with soap and water.

Make your mask fun:

  • If you have the necessary supplies and tools, try to make a mask with your kid(s)

  • Pick out fabric that the kid(s) will actually want to wear on their face

Make a daily mask plan with your child

  • Create a storage rack of CLEAN masks for your kid(s) to grab each day for school.

Store used masks safely

  • Store used masks in plastic Ziplocs, brown paper bags, or reusable cloth bags until they can be washed

  • Keep a little hamper in the car so your kid(s) can take their masks off right away

Have a back up plan

  • Send your kids with an extra mask just in case!

  • Create a little kit with hand sanitizer, soap, a fresh mask and any other essentials (make sure to go over with your kid(s) where it is located)
