How to pick a mask
Shopping for protective face masks can be confusing and frustrating. You may experience issues with fit, durability, and effective protection. Follow our checklist to find a stylish mask that will fit, protect, and last. These features can also help the wearer customize their fit and level of protection.
100% Cotton
Cotton is natural, non-irritating, breathable, and easy to clean. Synthetic fabrics like Polyester are hydrophobic (water-fearing) and have a greater potential to grow bacteria. This can lead to a smelly mask even after washing.
Woven
We recommend using a tightly-woven fabric with a high thread count and no stretch. Stretchy knit fabrics (think t-shirt) have large gaps in their surface that become bigger when stretched. This allows more particles to pass through. A non-stretchy tightly-woven structure (think bed sheets) has fewer holes that will not become bigger when worn.
2+ Layers
We recommend at least 2 layers of fabric with a filter pocket to build protection.
Filter Pocket
A mask with a filter pocket lets you build your protection! Some companies provide filters while others suggest using PM 2.5 filters, HEPA filters, or blue shop towels. Use of a filter can increase the effectiveness of your mask.
Moldable Nose Piece
A moldable metal nose piece customizes the fit by reducing gapping around the nose bridge and keeping the mask from falling down. This may reduce fogged glasses.
Non-Medical Device
Face Masks that are FDA approved and certified PPE should be left for the Health Care workers. For everyday usage of the general population, face masks made of the proper textile with a filter should be enough protection when combined with social distancing, limited outings, and vigorous hand washing.
Lasting Fasteners
Make sure the material that is being used to hold up the mask is going to be comfortable and durable. People with hearing aids or glasses may want to try masks that tie around the head instead of hooking around the ears. Some masks come with adjuster toggles or customizable ties to ensure a better fit.
Passes the "Light Test"
If possible, shine a light through the material to check its filtering ability. Think of the light as particles. If little to no light gets through, the fabric is more tightly-woven and may be more effective.

To ensure the best fit, read the size dimensions before ordering or buying. Measure a mask that fits you well to compare.
